I wonder to know why companies such as Skybot, AVG provide free antivirus? Are all those free software reliable?

The business model is quite simple. It is the same as those people giving away free samples of food at the mall and fairs. If you like this enough you will buy this. These companies are betting that they can make you happy. Which means that they WANT to solve all of your problems. If they do not. Why should you buy the ADVANCED versions of their software. Which usually means - Tech Support, Auto Updates, Auto Install, Auto Warnings through email, and any other additional features they think you will need. That is why these so called "Little Guys" try so hard!

I had AVG free edition for a long time and I was pretty happy with it. It did a pretty good job until my brother started downloading porn on my computer and I got a real messed up virus then I had to go out and pay a bunch of money for Norton so I could get rid of it. Just be careful cause a lot of them have adware and spyware attatched to them.
most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser.
