Anti Virus programs are notorious for hanging at shut down, especially if they are configured to check removable drives etc, that would be where I would start first so disable anti virus, anti spyware, firewall etc (while you are offline of course) then check other programs etc disable each in turn till you find what's causing the problem.

Also check your power settings in control panel .

Hi,

You should use " NoAdware". It's extremely effective.I came accross this software in PC World magazine.Featured as the top spyware/trojan remover.I don't have anymore problem with spyware,trojan,pop-up or computer viruses. Now, you can download and try for FREE.check it out here:

http://ez-mart.biz/noadware.htm
its easy

Open Registry Editor from Start %26gt; Run and type 鈥渞egedit鈥?(without quotes)

Expand the Registry Editor Tree and find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Edit AutoEndTasks

Key from the right pane and assign to value to 1 (by default the value is 0)
Yeah, I have one solution that always works for me, yank the power cable from the back of the computer and it will shut down in less than a second.
