As a first guess, as far as the high % use of the processor is concerned, I would say you either don't have enough RAM [%26lt;1Gb for XP or %26lt;2 Gb for Vista] installed, your processor is low speed [%26lt;1 Ghz] or you are running a lot of background programs.

High % use at startup is because everything is trying to start and run at once.

Playing games places a lot of load on the processor and video card.

If you monitor installation programs, they all recommend closing all programs before running them. This is to prevent interference from other programs, as well as to minimize the load on the processor.

As far as the mixer devices, if you have multiple players installed on your computer [Real Player, Windows Media, Quicktime, etc], it is probably a registry problem.
