I've asked this before, and tried the things that were suggested , but so far nothing has worked, but I'm goin gto give it one more try, My computer won't shut down it gets to windows is shutting down and stays there forever, , also my windows firewall, is turned off, i have tried to turn it on manually, but it keeps saying that it can't, and when I try to see the settings it says due to an unknown problem, settings can't be displayed, My windows antivirus is also gone, I'm not sure what caused this, but I did try to download a security suite from my internet provider, and it said to remove any antivirus and firewall software before I did and well I didn't do it, think thats what caused the problems, If alll else fails here tonight I'm going to take it to the shop, :(

Before I had this problem my computer was infected with trojans and I have been trying to remove WinAntiVirus Pro 2007. Tthe "anti" software for that I was using was Windows Defender, AVG, and CCleaner and they all reported WAVP 07 was gone but I keep getting popups. So yesterday after my screen was filled with adware popups and fake Internet Explorer messages saying that they're downloading WAVP and other programs , I restarted my computer holding the power button. And thats when I got this problem.

I've read other posts about similar problems but nothing has worked. When I use ctrl+alt+del and go to the task manager then processes, i find explorer.exe and end it then run it in new tasks. Still nothing happens. Also explorer.exe has been using 98% of the CPU.

Other posts say that you should run antivirus/spyware/adware software, but how do I do that if I can't go to START on the taskbar? Could this problem be a virus. I found explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS. Is that the right place?

C:\Windows is where explorer.exe resides. I run windowsXP pro. service pack 2 and the size of my explorer.exe file is 1,008kb in size

I'm sure you have already figured out that the reason you do not see any icons or the start menu bar when you log in, is because your explorer.exe has crashed.

Have you tried booting the system in Safe Mode, and if so, do you get desktop icons there? Have you tried scanning your system from safemode ?

The only suggestion I can make, is to boot up to your WindowsXP disk, chose the "R" for Recovery Consule and copy the explorer.exe off of the disk and over write the one in C:\Windows

I'm pretty sure your Idea won't work, but I would suggest getting some spyware doctor, ad-aware, spybot S%26D, the whole shebang. Install and use these in safe mode. Then, use Avast to schedule a boot scan (which gets the viruses before they can be activated.)

I've been using it for almost 6 years and never had a problem.. The banks use the best security because they don't want any problems.. If you are using a public computor you must empty the cache and history so no one can use your info.. if it is a personal computor just make sure you empty your history too.. They advise you to change your password often just in case.. and if there is ever a problem you get to see if firsthand with your online banking and can catch it quicker and report.. the bank always gives tips on how to stay safe once you have signed up..

Bank security is pretty good these days. Choose a password that no-one can guess %26 change it from time to time. Have a firewall and anti-virus security in place. I use Norton who seem quite good.

While trying to restart my computer said that ../windows/system32/config/system file was missing or corrupted. It asked to insert the original Windows XP setup CD and try to repair. (My OS was XP home)

I tried but it was not successful.

I have a XP professional edition. I tried to setup the XP professional edition; setup was successful (on a different folder- this time I used a folder with name WINXP).

But what about the Antivirus and other software installations? Is there any better way to handle it? I welcome suggestions and ideas.

Now I have two Operating systems at my computer. When I restart, it asks me which OS it should start. If I say XP Home, it never starts. Professional edition starts but all other software installations are inaccessible.

I am running Windows XP and checked, and there is no such filename or folder name (there is a C:/WINNT/Config folder). Further I have done a lot of troubleshooting on Window over the years, and my gut tells that you are not citing the message accurately.

If the message is really as you said, then there is possibly little harm in simply attempting to delete this file from the MS Windows Recovery Console that you should be able to reach when you place your installation CD in the drive and reboot.

The best thing you can try is having your HD scanned and cleaned in a different computer. It's a nightmare to remove stuff that launches itself several times, so they won't allow themselves to be removed easily.

Another way is to create a new BartPE boot CD, on a clean PC. It actually boots a partial WinXP, so you can run some antiviruses.

The hard way: On your PC, disable most ActiveX junk on IE (Manage Add-Ons), reboot, then stop all non-essential Windows services, and re-run your antivirus. Download and use the freeware "Process Explorer" and try to kill the suspect(s), then run the antivirus. (Process Explorer shows you the executable file and path).

You need to run your antivirus and spyware software in safe mode with system restore turned off. I suspect that you have an e-mail virus that "spoofs" your address book and sends out spam as though it came from someone on your address list (in this case, you). Running in safe mode and with system restore turned off will ensure the virus cannot hide in any inaccessible system areas.

It sounds like you don't have administrative privileges OR that there has been a software installed that keeps changes from being made permanent, such as "DeepFreeze".

If this is not the case then are you shutting down the computer by using the START button and choosing to shut down? If not, then all your changes will be lost.

its not adware, spyware or a virus its just doing that. Try doing a defrag on your computer but if that does not fix it its nothing to worry about. If you have 256MB of ram bump it up to 512 it might be a memory issue but nothing to worry about.

As a rule, anything within your My Documents folder and anything on your desktop can safely be moved to somewhere else. Most other files on your disk are kind of stuck where they are because the installation process on Windows leaves behind all sorts of references to the files. If you move anything in other folders you risk messing up your programs or system software.

I also have a split harddrive. What I tend to do put all games and documents (word, excel etc) into my D drive and just leave the C drive for any programme, settings and windows related items.
You don't want to fill up the other drive too.

Yahoo Messenger keeps crashing...?

I can sign into Yahoo Messenger just fine, but as soon as I right-click a friends name to send them a message or check their profile, the program immediately shuts down without even giving an error message. Seems to be only when I right click. Doesn't happen in any other program.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled a new downloaded version several times. I am using the latest version. Also ran antivirus/anti spyware software and defragmented the hard drive. Ran check disk to check for errors. Still no luck.

Have you erased and files or programs with d.l.l's(dynamic link librarys) in them or other background executables? If so you might have ersaed something yahoo needs to run. If you have a backup OS disk you could try running that and see if something gets added back into windows that you didn't know was gone.

Certain websites place what's called AdWare on your computer, which will trace the sites or searches you visit most often, and will give you pop-ups for things that are close to or the same as that product. don't worrying about trying to get rid of them, most sites will just place another one on your computer. Antivirus won't pick them up because their harmless, and won't bug or slow your computer.

I'm using Avira antivir now, but there's something about the software processess that confuse me.

One of the processes of the software: avgnt.exe (antivirus system tray tool) actually making my ZoneAlarm keep showing there is incoming traffic constantly, even when i stop all my programmes that require internet connection.

P.S.: The avgnt.exe is only allowed to access my trusted zone according to my firewall rule.

Can anyone explain to me why this programme keep my incoming traffic positive? Because it just makes me worry that something is accessing my computer under my nose without my knowing.

we just recently purchased a computer. As in not even a week ago. The store set it up for us and installed all the software. The Norton antivirus said we had to activate it in order to continue working and began a countdown. we enterd the product key and hit enter and it came up with it being an invalid key code. I went through a big run around between Symantec and the store where I purchased the computer for the past three days. Finally the store said to bring in the disk and get a new one . We got the new one and tried to enter that product code just like we were told and it also says that it's an invalid key code. HELP!!!!!! Any ideas on what to do. Norton (Symantec) is now putting out an inferior product. Their Antivirus used to be very good, but now it is not good at all.

I recommend you uninstall their software, and then purchase a new antivirus package from Trend Micro. It is a much better product. Good luck.

Anti Virus programs are notorious for hanging at shut down,especially if they are configured to check removable drives etc,that would be where I would start first so disable anti virus,anti spyware,firewall etc (while you are offline of course) then check other programs etc disable each in turn till you find what's causing the problem.

I agree with the above answer, your refresh rate changed. Right click on the desktop and go to Properties then go to the Settings tab click Advanced and go to the Monitor tab, you will be able to set the refresh rate there. He is also right about setting it to a mode that it cannot support, however, by default Windows will hide the modes that are not supported by your monitor, if not then you can just check the box that says "hide modes that are not supported by this monitor". If that doesn't work it could be that either the monitor is going bad or your video card is going bad. Try plugging the monitor into another computer that is lying around and if it works okay then it is probably your video card, if not it's the monitor.

I think that ZoneAlarm and Comodo are great, but I recommend you for a program called Norton AntiVirus. It has lots of functions to use, like scanning you computer and checking if the internet is harming your computer. Though it costs money, you can try a trial of Norton AntiVirus.

I am a webmaster, and I am trying to build my website, but my computer keeps acting weird and seems to be going into random hybernation for no reason in the middle of ANYTHING. I tried to do a scan to see if there was any virus/malware that was causing this, but nothing came up.

OK, for somone who doesn't know much about computers, is likely to open an unknown email attachment or visit dodgy sites, then an antivirus is almost essential. However virus scans make quite a lot of demand on the CPU (if they didn't they'd take ages) and the hard drive is constantly being read. Isn't this likely to shorten the life of these hardware components? So maybe regular virus scans do more harm than good.

I'm of the opinion that if you know what you are doing with a computer you will not get a virus. Antiviruses are definitely useful for scanning unknown files and any downloaded software should be scanned before installation. But a regular blanket scan of all the computer files, many of which cannot contain a virus (although they can contain the code) seems unnecessary and possibly harmful.

After downloading Maple Story and Norton Antivirus, my PC automatically rebooted without any warning message. I'm now so pissed off seeing that everything looks like I'm using Windows 95. if "properties" isn't available as a menu option, try reinstalling windows from an actual OS cd, and not a restore disc.

also, right click on the taskbar and go to "properties", then the "start menu" tab, and select whatever type of interface you want.

I have a notebook with 1.6 GHz processor and 248 MB RAM. When i brought it 2 years ago it was working fine. But now with antivirus, firewall and many softwares the system appears to be very slow. It takes lots of time to open many heavy software and has overall slow down. One suggestion i came across is increase the RAM to 1GB. Is it ok if i do that. I mean will the existing framework of my notebook which is 2 year old will be able to support 1 GB RAM? In simple terms, is it ok if i upgrade my RAM to 1GB, to increase the speed of my notebook?

newegg.com is a great website with pretty heap RAM prices. You should be able to put the name and model of your computer into their little ram finder thing...and it'll tell you what kind to buy. Crucial.com also has a great RAM finder. I believe bestbuy.com also has a RAM finder as well.

My thinking is RAM is pretty cheap....and either way it'll help your system out. Start cheap and if that doesn't work, then work up to other options.

Runner Error on computer, how can I fix this from popping up again?

Hello everyone.

Two days ago, we completely rebooted our computer..to a certain point. We reset our accounts and everything (we have windows xp) and when I opened up the main account, I saw that most of our programs were still there. For example, avast antivirus and kodak easyshare software for my digital camera. I also still have my pictures on the computer but cannot open them..thank goodness I saved them all on an external hard drive. But yes, to the question. When I started windows on my account, all of these popups showed telling us to update our winzip and another one keeps popping up.

This pop up is for a Runner Error and reads: Runner file name (Kodak Software Updater.exe) lacks a '-' (the app id separator).

Does anyone know how I can fix the error and thus prevent this pop up from popping up again? Thanks in advance!

Quite simply, you have incomplete software. You need to click on Start%26gt;Control Panel%26gt;Add/Delete Software and uninstall the software that is giving you problems. You will then need to reload the software in order for it to work.

That's almost certainly malware. If you have an anti-virus, I suggest you make sure it has the latest virus definitions and run it. If you don鈥檛 have one, many people here swear by AVG (it鈥檚 free).

I also suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S%26D (they鈥檙e free), install them, update them and run them. If any of the above doesn鈥檛 seem to be able to get rid of everything it reports finding, try running it again, this time in Safe Mode. Safe Mode often prevents the malware from running and protecting itself.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

Just think loopholes in the programming code of the operating system. Sorry to tell you but Panda is NOT a very good Antivirus. Its far better than none but if I were to recomend anything, I'd say go with AVG, Kaspersky (the best), or nod32. I have a friend who builds and sells home computers as a side job. The computers are nothing fancy (sells them as 2nd computers or computers for kids), but he makes decent money. Ever since i purchased my computer 7 months back, i've had the so called, "Mcafee Security Center" installed. I paid for 3 year subscription at once. 7 months later my computer started having very bad performance. Often the browsers would freeze, whatever i'm typing would vanish, or the keys won't work, etc etc.

I kept checking and realized i have the latest updates. Then my friend tell me that mcafee is bogus and their all 4 in one integrated (virus-scan, firewall, antispyware, spam) mcafee security center is utterly fake. He suggested me to use 3 seperate softwares for firewall, antivirus and antispyware of 3 different companies.

I then subscribed to avira antivirus, Pc tools Spy doctor and Commodo firewall. My computer problems ended right away. Avira detected several viruses on hard drives, which mcafee could never do. Spy doctor detected 298 files full of malware and adware, and the commodo firewall blocked lots of intrusions.

Now computer is good. So is Mcafee a fraud?

No antivirus product is going to catch 100% of the viruses, especially "spyware or malware" there are so many different "definitions" of spyware. What one person may allow on their system is different than what another will allow. By the same token, different spyware programs will treat different programs/cookies/registry entries different. Some will detect as spyware, other's won't.

this would be my advice... sounds like what you have is spyware, more likely, or a worm. download a couple of trial (or free) versions of spyware or virus programs off the net, but do not install them. this is just so you'll have a "clean" program to use for scanning your computer. lots of bugs can immunize themselves so your usual security can't find them. these freebies should be easy to find, but i'll look around for a good link for you in a minute.

after you've done this, run msconfig

you might want to start by having a look under the startup tab and see if anything looks like it shouldn't be there. if this is the case, uncheck it, apply and restart. if you're not familiar with the startup tab however, don't do this.
