Problem with computer shutting down...?

A friend of mine has a computer that was built by someone who supposedly knew what he was doing...The computer will freeze/shutdown randomly, but it seems to do it more so when running antivirus software and other processes that take a lot of juice to run...

The last message came up on a blue screen..."Aproblem has been detected...windowns has been shut down to prevent damage. Problem caused by ntfs.sys....Page_fault_in_nonpagedarea."

Has anyone seen this problem and what can he do to fix it...it has been going on since he got the computer and is rather annoying...he cant even get through a mcafee virus scan without it shutting down.

The person who built it probably gave it the wrong heatsink which could overheat the processor and shut it down. Check to see what model heatsink he has and see if its compliant with the processor. Or check if the fan on the heatsink is working.

it could be a RAM issue, how much ram is in the thing? you want at least 256mb for xp.
If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

Explorer Not Running On Startup?

My home computer has been having a problem lately - After logging in, nothing will happen. All that comes up is my desktop background, but no icons or anything, not even the taskbar. I can manually start new tasks pretty easily, but that's kind of annoying, and even if I start explorer.exe, it will be up for a second or two but then disappear. I have been running 3 different antivirus software and the problem persists. Does anyone know how this can be corrected?

Right off the bat, it is best to have only ONE anti-virus program installed on your computer. Multiple anti-spyware software programs are ok and even recommended, but anti-vitrus software rarely if ever gets along together. Pick your favorite and uninstall the others. Hello Reikan.

I would recommend you start up in safe mode, pressing F8 at the startup screen. Get some answers on what to do while in safe mode. You could also try to go to "Run" if possible, and type in: MSCONFIG. Check all that apply in the GENERAL Tab as well as the STARTUP Tab. See if it is in Normal Startup with every sub-box checked in gray. I recommend not to change anything on the other tabs unless you are absolutely sure you know what you are doing.

Is it possible that the userinit in your registry has been altered? Or userinit.exe in your computer is defected? In my place (Indonesia) there's a virus that change this setting. Try to check that in the registry, just use the "find" feature and look for userinit. (It's not possible to describe the registry keys here since yahoo answer will censor it).

After dealing with this scumbucket problem, I finally went in and did a restore back to about a week before this happened, and, when I rebooted, it was gone..

I'm confused! Our OS crashed on our computer, and my stepdad reformatted the hard drive. Last night while it was at my mom's, they were able to get it started and going online with some antivirus software installed. Well now at home, I'm getting this error message: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. There aren't any disks in the drive, and we don't have the OS disks (my husband left them at my mom's when he picked up the computer) - are we temporarily screwed?

You're temporally screwed until you get the Windows disk(CD) that came with the computer. Once you have it, boot into safe mode and set master boot to CD drive and exit. Shut down computer. Insert CD in drive bay and restart computer. Once computer restarts, it will give you some options...choose Repair. Follow any prompts. You may have to restart PC again.

Unfortuantely, the disk that your computer is referring to is the hard drive disk. The OS is having trouble reading the hard drive instructions and thus the error. What you will need to do is buy a new hard drive and install it to fix the present problem. No big deal, just a pain in the *** is all. And yes, you are temporarily screwed until you pick up another hard drive.
You may not necessarily need a new hard drive, it could just be formatted wrong (a software problem). This seems plausible to me since you said your stepdad just completely reformatted the drive. However, since you said it was working a little while ago, it's also possible the drive is physically damaged. You should be able to test the drive's integrity to some extent if you put a DOS-based boot disk or CD in, and use FDISK or other tools to look at the drive. However, this is a little complicated to explain in a short answer like this. If you do get another drive though, you will have to go through these same steps, so it might be worth it to look up FDISK, FORMAT, etc and simple DOS commands and play with them on the drive you have now before you go buy another one. There's a chance you could fix it without having to buy anything at all. If the DOS stuff is too complicated for you, you could try putting in the "recovery" cd which might have come with your computer. Note that both these options will likely erase everything currently on the drive.

Its a virus, you can use the NOD32 or avast but the file is cannot be save. you must delete it permanently and don't try to open it..

I tried to ask one of the geeksquad agents over the phone a question about how to manually delete a virus file and he said that he doesnt know anything and I would have to talk to a service agent over the phone and pay $99, and I asked him the fee for deleting a virus and he said $299, my computer isnt even worth that much, and their slogan is that you have the right to a safe computer. arent these fees crazy! $99 for talking to someone on the phone, $250 for installing an antivirus software! what do you think about these fees

Find a local computer guy. The Geek squad are losers. I've proved them wrong more than once. They often "repair" rigs and when the customer gets his computer home it doesn't have sound or something. I charge 1/2 what they do and I check everything before i return it and even put the latest drivers and updates in. I'm sure you have techs like me in your town. I will pick up a computer reimage the drive put all the drivers and updates in then deliver and set it back up with their printers cams etc starting at $150 so, yes, $250 just to remove a virus is way out of line. Problem is, people pay it!
being a former cable repair technician ive had nasty run in's with the geek squad (they pert near crashed an entire network of a customer my plugging a PC into the WAN port on a wireless router and the modem in a standard port....i wonder why id didnt work......hmmmmm). i wonder if they can fix thier own cranial-rectile inversion :D

Well I agree completely with you. A reputable shop locally owned runs on average about a 1/3 the cost they charge.

Can somebody who is computer smart **please** help me?????

I have cable internet, and my service is connected, but I can't get online. My internet icon keeps popping up saying there is "little or no connectivity". I have tried to repair the connection and tried to renew my IP address, and I went in and told it to find my IP address automatically, but it says it can't renew my IP address and thus I can't get online.

I thought it was a virus on my computer preventing me from getting online and it still could be. I went and bought an antivirus software, ran it like crazy on my computer, deleted a few things and rebooted over and over and it still won't work.

I tried to run dns on my computer and did the IPconfigure prompts and asked it to renew, and it still won't renew my IP. When I ask it to release my IP address, it just says 0.0.0.0 and says the connection timed out and cannot contact my DHCP.

Can somebody please help me? I have tried everything I can think of and don't know what else to do.

If you're not getting an IP address (i.e., if you're IP address is 0.0.0.0), then something's not working right with your wireless router. If you have a network cable, you can plug it directly into the wirless router (or combination router/modem, if that's what you've got). That SHOULD give you an address. If it doesn't, chances are either that your router has DHCP turned off (it's usually on by default), or else the router is screwed. If it does give you an address and all works well, then it's either a problem with the wireless setup, or else your wireless adapter isn't working right. This stuff can all get kinda tricky - best bet is to get a friend in there who understands networking to work on it, give 'em a nice dinner and a beer, and they'll hook you up.

Is this connection you are trying to establish for a new computer? Was it working before? Does your ISP have any local issues that are being repaired? If this is a new computer you may need to register the mac address of the system with your ISP depending on who it is. Good Luck

I am trying to set up a home network between my Dell XPS Desktop (running Windows XP Media Center Edition) and my Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook (running Windows XP Home Edition). I have run the network setup on both computers, using the same workgroup name for both. The desktop can view the files on my laptop, but my laptop can't view the files on the desktop. I have tried to fix the firewall, but I am not sure if I did it right. Both computers are running Norton 360 as the antivirus software, and have the windows firewall enabled. If you think it is a firewall issue, give me detailed instuctions on how to fix it. Also, I am using a Linksys router and my internet connection on the laptop is working.

What Is With These People Here Claiming Windows Vista Sucks?

I'm tired of seeing everyday people write "windows vista has bugs" "windows vista has compatibility issues" while the only bug I've noticed was a ant crawling on my LCD and the only compatiblility issue (out of several dozen programs) was actually good that I want incompatible, the starforce copy protection system.

As a windows vista user, one who has experienced no slowdowns, viruses, BSODS, anything of that kind, I have no clue why people say these things. Perhaps Apple hires people to do so?

I mean, my printer worked, my flash drive that didn't work with XP worked with vista, my computer is always speedy on startup, etc.

Most computer problems are caused by bad device drivers, user misunderstanding, bad hardware, and no precautions (like antivirus software)

My question is, why do people still complain about windows vista?

I have used Vista on some computers with an organization I that I do work with and have had some of these problems. It is so large that it makes the older computers run very slow (even if they supposedly have enough memory to operate it), my Dad is having terrible compatibility problems with his printer (which is relatively new) and I don't find it as intuitive as Windows. I also agree it is unstable and buggy. My employer (with 1,000 employees with computers) has elected to wait for now for making the switch (i just got a new work computer and it is running XP) and I have no intention of changing from Windows XP at home until I absolutely have to.

Question about SSL on home computer?

I am at my wits end with this problem and I am hoping someone out there can help me with it.

Problem: when I purchase something online my computer won't show the confirmation pages for my purchases althought the purchase generally shows up on my bank site and I receive confirmation email from the company I purchase from. In my online college library, after I type in a search, it won't go to the results. There is a lot of lag sometimes, too. I can no longer use Yahoo Chat because the program keeps turning off and on while I am chatting. I tried using other chat clients but have the same result with them. My antivirus software (AVG Free and Prevx) says everything is all clear as far as that goes.AT%26T has reset the router three times, and there doesn't appear to be a line issue, so I am thinking maybe I am having an SSL issue. But, this is just a shot in the dark for me as I know a smidgen about computers but not enough to say for sure what the problem is. Don't want to have to wipe it!

There are many tests for SSl function - here is one that is a quick check from Boston University, that will just establish a SSL (HTTPS) connection and verify that encrypted data can transfer back and forth.

Generally you wouldn't be able to even make a purchase online if SSL was not working, as the credit card page should ALWAYS be encrypted . Not sure if you have ever run firefox browser instead of Microsoft Internet explorer. But that would be an excellent way to test SSL function, and the security of your connection, beside that FIREFOX is more secure that IE.

My suspicion is that your connection is being spoofed or hijacked, maybe intentionally. Do you share a wireless connection in your house? Perhaps the router will not do 128 bit encryption. I would try to hardwire to the router just for a test, instead of wireless, if that is your configuration.

What DO YOU GET when you complete a purchase? I mean what screen comes up? connection lost error? timed out? or just...nothing?

Programs don't run when I double click?

I've been clicking on the icons of programs(not a shortcut, but directly from Program Files) and the hour glass would appear beside my mouse, but after a while it disappears and the program never runs. Not sure wat this Supe AntiSpyware program is and the developer but advise is that if it's a "freeware" downloaded, make sure you got it from a reputable site... there are too many bogus sites out there offering free or discounted pirated or spyware infested softwares.

2 Main causes for this problem which I can think of if the spyware program change is the cause...

1) The Super AntiSpyware (SAS for short) inhibits your icon-ed program (IEP for short).

-Do a full scan and read through the report, if it states that your IEP is a spyware and has removed certain files from the main program (to protect you), you will face the problem described above. If the IEP is important and you really need it, go to the next step, else, it's better to just delete it.

-First explore your SAS to see if you can add your IEP and other programs which are disabled or identified as spyware. think if you really need it before you either add them to your exception list or ignor result from the scans.

My office antivirus software had auto detected w32.Gammima virus had infecteded my thumbdrive. From that day onwards, i am unable to access to the files that i had save in my thumbdrive in other computers.

Need good advice urgently! I once had a vbs virus called bandot.exe. I did clean the virus manually (by modify the vbs .dll file and delete suspected service) cause it's a local virus and not detected by common antivirus software. Problem exist after I modified (it messed up?) the windows registry on windows logon (cause the virus affecting the login). So, I can't log on to my windows. The logon interface exist, I put my password, it logging in, and then... it's logging out! I got stuck, so I install new windows on different partition. Still, I have to use the first windows os. It's windows xp sp2. Any idea to fix it? Please give good answer instead of : format and reinstall.

symptoms are basically like popups or similar things. other annoying things wih internet explorer (i think it affects firefox as well but I dont really use it) like i cant open tabs at the moment or right click anything. occasionally the internet will go dial up speed on me. and there were some 'reditty' link things that i read about somewhere but i havent notice that lately.

I would suggest buying a Mac. There is absolutely NO viruses for OSX.

They're more stable than pc's and don't break down every few years.

But if that's not an option, go back to the site you were previously downloading the antivirus software and attempt to re-download it. Or look for the installer for it on your computer. It should be there somewhere.

I am an avid mac user and I do not recommend Norton or McAffee for any computer because they can cause more damage than good. The good thing about a mac is that it is pretty much safe from viruses because macs are not targeted that much. However, it is better to be safe than sorry. One, firewall is already built into the OS. Since you will be getting a new mac, you will find it under "System Preferences" and then you will want to go to "Security." Under "Security," there are three tabs and you want to click on the Firewall tab. Under this tab you have the ability to configure your firewall.

Norton Antivirus quarentine?

My norton caught a trojan and couldn't clean the file, It was just an incomplete music file. At this point it quarentined it.

Firewall and Antivirius?

I have a home PC and it has 2 firewalls and 2 antivirus softwares. One is from McAfee Security Center, which came with my PC when I purchased it (it has since been updated 2x). The other is Norton Protection Center, which was included with my Internet provider's do-it-yourself installation kit.

Now, both of them have firewalls, I've already turned off the Norton firewall and left the McAfee firewall on. My question is should I keep the both antivirius softwares on or turn one of them off? Also, what's the benefit of not have 2 firewalls and 2 antivirius softwares running at the same time?

When I run my virus scan, the same virus Win32:Kuang2 is always detected. The options are given to delete, repair, move, scan, or move to virus chest. None of these work. The second step is to schedule a boot scan. This still does not remove the virus. I'm not sure of the next step I should take, or if there is any free software out there that could help me? I like the free Avira Antivir because all you have to do is close their advertisement that pops up when you update the virus signature. i would use avg anti virus instead but if you have less ram and hard disk space i would download ewido anti-spyware microscanner - that detects for trojans, worms, spyware, ad aware etc.., and its not even 1mb, its less. its portable to use.
Moving it to the chest will sort of de-activate the virus, which is better than deleting the whole file, in some cases, like when a system file is infected, and you couldn't delete it, Avast moves it to the chest, where the virus will be monitored.

Of course, if the file infected isn't a system file, it's okay to delete it.

Chest can be thought as a special folder on your computer that is safe and isolated, which makes it a suitable place for storing specific files...u can still work with it...

In the chest its safe (it cant do any harm) and it allows you the option of restoring it if you find your system reacting badly to it being removed, although if it isn't a system critical file and your computer operates fine without it you can delete it from the chest but I would wait for a few weeks before fully deleting it just to be safe

I believe you should allow only 2 security applications to run on start-up. A professional firewall and an anti-spyware would be suitable for those positions since spywares and adwares are more common than virus, which occupies only 15% of malware infections according to my sources. However, if you prefer high security compared to only a slight reduction of start-up speed then let your anti-virus be the third application. Personally, Avira AV, Comodo Pro + Spyware Terminator are the three programs that are on my Vista start-up list and they haven't caused any conflicts whatsoever.

G'day Kathy. If you are using a FREE anti-virus then you should update every day or every time you start the PC. If you have paid for a good anti-virus or security program it should notify you every time you go online that it has just updated itself. There should be an icon on your taskbar near the clock and when you click Start-%26gt;Programs, it should be listed on the Program menu. If you cannot find them you may be using Microsoft Security which is updated when they remember. If you type in Anti Virus in the search menu at the top of the page it will give you heaps of free anti virus and spyware places. I won't type them here as I may be on the wrong trail.
That's a personal preference. After being in the industry for more years than I'd like...In regards to viruses, I only scan about once a month. I keep my virus definitions up to date and keep an eye out for suspicious activity. Most virus scanners will automatically scan e-mails and that is currently the primary source of virus attacks.

However, in regards to spy-ware, I don't think a user can scan enough these days. There is no perfect spy-ware scanner on the market, nor anything close in my professional opinion. I use multiple spy-ware programs (Spybot 1.5, Windows Defender, and PC Tools Threatfire) and scan often (at least three times a week). I let my scheduler handle it though. I don't do manual scans.
