Can't boot windows xp, hardware or software problem?

weeks ago my brother's desktop would turn off by itself, if it was left turned on over night in the morning it would be turned off. some time later windows automatic update told me i had some stuff 2 install, i kept canceling everytime it prompted bcuz i didn't like what it was going to install, eventually something ended up installing itself and i would get the 'ur comp will shut down in 5 mins' msg, 1 of those times i was away from the computer for more than 5 mins the computer had rebooted, i don't even know what got installed after all. after that install, @ random times i'd hear something clicking INSIDE the computer tower, it'd b a single click and then everything'd freeze 4 a couple seconds and then go back 2 normal. i ran antivirus/antispy and all that stuff, but nothing came up, so i ignored it. one night we left the comp on over night and the next morning got "Reboot and select a proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"

Your PC can no longer read the boot sector of your hard drive. If you have important files there, try taking it out and installing it as slave drive in another PC. If the files could still be read, copy them immediately to the master hard drive and burn a copy on CD.

Install a new hard drive on your PC.

The clicking was hardware related and had nothing to do with the software update. Your hard disk has failed.
