AVG Email Scanner, do I really need it?

I am using AVG antivirus. I'm 98% happy, so don't suggest that I change to a different software. The part I'm not happy with is that it slows my computer down quite a bit when my email client checks for mail.

Now my real question is: Since I'm using what would seem to be pretty reliable pop email servers, (IE comcast, but the same would apply with any big name ISP), do I *really* need to have my incoming email scanned by my AV program?

I've already set my email client (Thunderbird) to only check for mail every 30 mins (I'd like to have it check every 10 mins).

Suggestions?

AVG is a good antivirus software, however it's not optimized for Windows OS. You will continue to have problems scanning incoming e-mails when you use POP mail. You can try using IMAP to see if it speeds things up. Or if you REALLY want, you can download McAfee for free since you're on Comcast. Comcast offers McAfee Internet Security for free for all it's customers.

isp scanners, at best are not dependable, they dont look for the same things as a a/v would, avg works good if you use outlook or outlook express. as for thunderbird, not sure. it will scan it if change your default mail to thunderbird. i use web based mail so i have mine turned off.
No, you don't need it. It's a redundant layer of protection (your ISP is already scanning email) that does nothing but slow down the system, and has been known to cause problems with the inbox of outlook express. Just turn it off.
